Chapter 9 - Maintenance

9.1  The Detector and Elements

 

A.  Limits of Operation

 

 

The elements (aka hotwires or fi laments) used in the Series 400 GC are GOW-MAC 
rhenium-tungsten (WX). They may be purchased from GOW-MAC in "quads".  A quad 
consists of four matched and balanced fi laments with cable (P/N 13-355-400). WX 
fi laments should be used within the specifi ed limits as shown in Chart 4-1.

 

B.  Cleaning the Cell

 

 

Imperfectly vaporized liquid samples may be deposited on the fi laments or cavity walls of
the TC cell. Such deposits will aff ect the heat transfer properties of the cell and change the 
zero balance progressively until the zero will no longer be suffi  cient. Contamination of the 
detector may be removed by the following method 

AFTER THE OVEN HAS COOLED 

COMPLETELY:

 

 

1.  Shut "OFF" carrier gas and electrical power to the GC.

 

 

2.  Remove columns from the instrument.

 

 

3.  Replace columns with lengths of metal tubing (Figure 9-1).

 

 

4.  Inject 100 mL of acetone through the septum and leave overnight.
