unless  replacement  is  required.

•  The  pickup  pipe  is  a  press fit  in  the  pump  body 

(182).

•  Do  not  try  to  remove  the  screen  from  the  pipe. 

The  pickup  screen  and  pipe  is  serviced  as  an 
assembly  only.

Clean

All  p arts  in  clean  s o lve n t  and  blow   dry  w ith 
co m pressed  air.

—   Pum p  body  (180)  and  cover  (182)  for  cracks  or 

other  dam age.

—   G ears  (181  and  188)  for  wear.

—   Drive  gear  and  shaft  (181)  for  lack  of  fit  in  the 

pum p  body  (180).

Inside  of  the  cover  (182)  for  w ear  th at  w ould 

p erm it  oil  to  leak  past  the  ends  of  the  gears.  The 
pum p  gears,  cover,  and  body  are  not  serviced  

separately.  If  the  parts  are  dam aged  or  w orn, 
replace  the  entire  oil  pum p  assem bly.

Pressure  relief  valve  (183)  for  fit.  The  regulator 

valve  s h o u ld   s lid e   fre e ly   in  its  b ore  w ith o u t 
sticking   or  b inding.

6.  Idler  gear  (188)  in  the  pump  body  (180)  with  the 

smooth  side  of  the  gear  toward  the  pump  cover 
opening.  Index the  marks  made  during  disassembly.

T ig h ten

•  Screw s  (186)  to  9.0  N-m  (80  in.  lbs.).

•  Turn  the  driveshaft  by  hand  to  check  for  smooth 

operation.

8.  Pickup  screen  and  pipe  (187)  (if  removed)  (figure 

36).

•  If  the  pickup  screen  and  pipe  assembly  was 

removed,  it  should  be  replaced  with  a  new 
part.  Loss  of  press  fit  condition  could  result  in 

an  air  leak  and  loss  of  oil  pressure.

•  Mount  the  oil  pump  in  a  soft  jawed  vise.

•  A pply  s e a le r  to  th e  end  of  th e  pipe.

•  Tap  the  pickup  screen  and  pipe  into  place, 

using  J  21882  (5.0  L  and  5.7  L  engines)  or 

J  22144  (7.4  L  engines),  and  a  hammer.

•  The  pump  screen  must  be  parallel  with  the 

bottom  of  the  oil  pan  when  installed.

T hese  su rfa ces  should  be  sm ooth  and  free  from  
scoring  or  other  dam age.
