VALVE TRAIN COMPONENT
REMOVAL

Tools Required:
J 3049, Hydraulic Lifter Remover (Plier Type)
or
J 9290-1, H ydrau lic L ifter R em over (Slide
Hammer Type)
1. Nuts
2. Reinforcements
3. Rocker Arm Cover
4. Gasket
5. Studs

1. Nuts (6), balls (8), rocker arms (7), and pushrods (9).
• Every effort should be made to insure that
these m ating parts are in sta lle d in th e ir
original locations during assembly. A simple
valve train organizer can be made from a
piece of wood.
2. Lifters (10).
• Remove the lifters one at a time and place
them in an organizer rack. The lifters must be
installed into the same bore from which they
were removed.
• A stuck lifter can be removed using J 3049
(figure 10) or J 9290-01 (figure 11).

1. Bolts.
2. Cylinder heads.
• Use care when handling the cylinder heads to
prevent damage to rocker arm studs or gasket
sealing surface.
3. Gaskets.
TORSIONAL DAMPER REMOVAL
N O T IC E : The in e rtia l w e ig h t s e c tio n o f th e
torsional d a m p e r is assem b led to the hub with a
ru b b e r sleeve. The re m o v a l a n d in s ta lla tio n
p ro c e d u re s m u s t be fo llo w e d (w ith p ro p e r
tools) o r m o v e m e n t o f the inertia w e ig h t section
o f th e h u b w ill d e s tro y th e tu n in g o f th e
to r s io n a l d a m p e r a n d th e e n g in e tim in g
referen ce.
The torsional dam per has three timing notches on the
inertia ring. The number one cylinder tim ing reference
mark will be identified by a dab of white paint. If a new
dam per assembly is installed, mark the new assembly in
