PINION AND RING GEAR
Inspect
• Pinion and ring g e a r teeth for cracking, chipping,
scoring, or excessive wear.
• Pinion splines for wear.
• Pinion flan ge splines for wear.
• T h e fit of th e pinion on the pinion flange.
• T h e sealing su rface of the pinion flan ge for nicks,
burrs, or rough tool m arks w hich w ould c a u s e
d a m a g e to th e s e a ls ’ inside d ia m e te r and result in
an oil leak.
• R e p lac e all worn or broken parts.
• Ring and pinion g ears are m atch ed sets and are
both replaced any tim e a re p la cem en t of eith er is
necessary.
BEARINGS
Inspect

B earin gs visually and by feel.
T h e b earing s should feel sm ooth w hen oiled and
rotated w hile applying as much hand p ressure as
possible.
T h e large end of th e b earing rollers for wear. T his is
w h e re tap ered roller b earing w ea r is most evident.
B e a rin g c u p s for w ear, c ra c k s , b rin e llin g and
scoring.
B earin gs and cups are only replaced as sets.
If the rear axle w as operated for an exten ded period
of tim e with very loose bearings, the ring g e a r and
drive pinion will also require re p la cem en t.
Low m ilea g e b earing s m ay have m inute scratches
and pits on the rollers and the b earing cups from the
initial preload. Do not replace a b earing for this
reason.
B earing caps for cracks or chips.

be replaced with an eq u ally sized service shim .

Lubricate all parts with axle lubricant.
Pinion rear b earing (13) onto th e pinion.
