Dip th e seal (13) into c le a n 5 2 5 viscosity
refrigerant oil.
Install J 2 3 1 2 8 and th e seal (13) over th e
co m pressor shaft (39).
Push th e seal (13) into p lace with a rotary
motion.
Im portant
• Do not dislodge the O-ring (15).

S ea l shaft retainer ring (12) with J 5 4 0 3 (figure 13).
• P lace the flat side ag ain st th e seal seat.
• Use the sleeve of J 23128-A to press the ring
into its groove.
5. J 9 6 2 5 to the rear head of th e com pressor:
• G a g e charging lines or pressu rize the suction
side (low pressure side) of the co m p ressor
with refrigerant to e q u a liz e the p ressure to the
drum pressure.
6. N ew ab so rb ent s le eve (11).
• Roll the m aterial into a cylinder, o verlap ping
the ends.
• Slip the sleeve into the com pressor front head
w ith th e o v e rla p to w a rd th e to p o f th e
compressor.
• W ith a screw driver sp read th e sleeve en d s of
the sleeve butt at th e top vertical centerline.
7. Sleeve retainer (10) with J 23128.
• P lace th e flan ge fac e ag ain st th e front end of
the sleeve.
• Press and tap with a m allet to set th e retainer
and s le e v e into p la c e . P la c e th e re ta in e r
0.7937 mm (0.03125-inch) from the fac e of the
com pressor neck (figure 16).
8. Clutch plate and hub assem bly (2).
• R efer to “ C lutch P late and Hub A ssem b ly
R e p la c e m e n t.”
Im portant
Using im p ro per procedures, pounding or
collisions can d a m a g e the shaft seal and
the axial plate. If the axial plate is out of
position, the carbon fac e of th e shaft
seal m ay not contact the seal seat.
To ch ec k th e position of th e axial p la te on
th e shaft, re m o ve th e clutch driven plate
and m e a s u re th e d is tan ce b e tw e e n th e
front head exten sio n and th e flat sh o uld er
on th e shaft with a w ire g ag e. T h e c le a r­
a n c e s h o u ld b e 0 .6 6 - 1 .9 m m ( 0 .0 2 6 -
0 .0 7 5 -in c h ) (figure 16).
• If th e shaft has b een p ushed b ack in th e
axial p la te (m e a s u re m e n t g re a te r th an 1.9
mm (0 .0 7 5 -in c h ), d is a s s e m b le th e c o m ­
p resso r and re p la c e th e sh aft and axial
p late a s se m b ly , thrust races and thrust
b earing s.
• If th e re is too m uch or not en o u g h air g ap
b e tw e e n th e d riv e a n d d riv e n p la te s ,
c h e c k for sh aft d islocation. It will not be
p ossible to service th e co m p re ss o r if th e
carb o n se at is not seatin g ag ain st th e seal
seat.
9. S h aft nut (1) with J 9 3 9 9 .
• P lace th e com p ressor in a horizontal position
with the oil sum p down.
• R otate th e co m pressor shaft by hand.
• L eak test with J 23 40 0.
• R e p la c e shaft nut (1) with a new one.
PRESSURE RELIEF
VALVE REPLACEMENT
T h e pressure relief valve is located at th e rear of the
com pressor.
R em ove or D isconnect (Figure 1)
1. Valve (56).
2. S eal (57).
Clean
• T h e valve cavity to rem ove any dust or dirt before
installing a new seal.
Install or C o nn ect (Figure 1)
1. S eal (57) to the com pressor.
• Dip th e seal (57) in 5 2 5 viscosity refrigerant
oil.
2. Valve (56) to th e compressor.
