4.2 | Removal
First unfasten the bar ends. For this you will need sufficient
leverage, as the screw connection is often seized up. It is best to
unscrew cross-head screws with an impact driver. If you do not
have one, a couple of sharp taps with a hammer on a cross-head
screwdriver that fits the screw exactly and then applying a constant
force should help to loosen the screw.
Then you need to remove your old rubber grips. A professional
would blow compressed air between the rubber and the handlebar.
At home you can just as well squirt a little dishwashing liquid or
brake cleaner (no oil, petrol or other fuels) under the grip using a
disposable syringe.
IMPORTANT!
Risk of damage!
• Remove the instrument cluster housings from the handlebars so that they are
not scratched or damaged while the grips are being removed or fitted.
• If the grip is glued to the switch unit, carefully cut it away with a utility knife.
• Brake cleaner can dissolve sponge or foam rubber grips and is therefore not
suitable. Only use a mild cleaning agent for these types of grips
If the grips still cannot be pulled off the handlebar after following the above advice, use an open-
ended wrench (size 24) to push them off from their inner edge. This technique works a lot better than
levering the grips off with a screwdriver, for example.
CAUTION!
Risk of injury!
If you do not intend to reuse the old grips, they can simply be cut off lengthwise
with a carpet knife. Be particularly careful on the throttle side, because the
throttle tube under the rubber grip is usually made of thin plastic and can easily
be damaged.
4.3 | Installation
When installing, you must remember that the grip with the larger inside diameter is designed for the
right-hand side of the handlebars because it has to be pushed over the throttle grip sleeve on this
side. To make the grips easier to slide onto the handlebar, you can use one of the following methods:
• Warm up the grips gently (e.g. with a hair dryer, but do not use a hot-air gun) to make the material
more flexible.
• Soak the grips in a bowl of hot water with a little washing-up liquid for a few minutes. It will however
then take quite a long time for the grips to dry out and return to their normal stiffness (at least
24 hours).
