Section 5 – Testing & Troubleshooting
When the PT-353 transmitter module and the PR-353 receiver module have been set up and installed,
test them for proper operation before putting them into service.
5.1 Equipment Testing
There are two system configurations in which you can do equipment testing:
●
If you have both a PT-353 transmitter and a PR-353 receiver in the same shelf, you may perform
this test with the system out of service, using a loopback feature.
●
If the PT-353 and PR-353 modules are in different locations, you may perform the test end to end
with the system in service.
In either case, make sure that both the tested modules are configured alike and set to use the same
time slots.
5.1.1
Built-In Test Tone Generator
You can use either the built-in test tone generator on the PT-353 module or an external test tone
generator to perform an equipment test. The built-in test tone generator allows you to calibrate the
receive levels on the PR-353 module, while an external tone generator also allows you to calibrate the
input levels on the PT-353 module. To test with the built-in test tone generator, perform these steps:
1.
If you are using loopback testing, use instructions in your multiplexer operation manual to set up
the multiplexer loopback.
2.
On the PT-353 module, turn on the test tone generator (set the TEST switch on SW6 DOWN). The
generator transmits a 1004 Hz tone at -12 dBFS on both channels simultaneously (that
corresponds to an external input of +8.0 dBm, assuming the module is at factory calibration, 0
dBFS = +20 dBm).
3.
Observe the indicator lights on the PT-353 module: the SRVC and DIG indicator lights should be
on, and the FAIL and ERR indicator lights should be off.
For the next steps, check the output level and indicator lights on the PR-353 module in the local shelf
if you are using loopback testing or on the PR-353 module at the receive end if you are using end-to-
end testing.
4.
Observe the PR-353 LEVEL indicator lights for each channel. Check that the first two green
indicator lights are on and that the third green indicator light is just coming on at +8.0 dBm. If
desired, verify the output level setting by connecting an AC voltmeter to the outputs in parallel
with the normally connected equipment input which the PR-353 module drives. The output should
be less than 52 ohms.
5.
On the PR-353 module, verify that the ACT indictor light is on and the ERR and FAIL indicator
lights are off.
6.
If the system is not operating correctly, go to Section 5.3 –
Troubleshooting
.
7.
Turn off the test generator (set the TEST switch up).
8.
If you used a loopback, deactivate it. The system is now operational.
5.1.2
External Test Tone Generator
If you are using loopback testing, set up the multiplexer loopback according to the instructions in the
troubleshooting section of the multiplexer operation manual. To test using the external test tone
generator, perform these steps:
