FUEL

Side

of

the engine

with

the vacuum

opening

shown.

The fuel

pump is mounted

over

this opening

to

receive

the vacuum/pressure

from

the crankcase

for operarion.

TROUBLESHOOTING

If the spark plug of the cylinder to which

the vacuum line is connected

becomes

wet

fouled,

the

cause

may very well be a rup-

tured fuel pump diaphragm.

This reasoning

is

sound

for

both

types

of

fuel

pumps.

Sometimes

the pump that

is

not serviceable

is bolted

directly

to the side of the engine

block.

On other

installations

this non-ser-

viceable

pump has a vacuum hose connected

to the

cylinder

block.

When the

pump is

bolted

directly

to the

block, the

pump re-

ceives

vacuum

directly

from

the

cylinder

through a hole in the back side of the pump
and a matching

hole in the block.

A good test

for

the pump that

is con-

nected

to the intake

manifold

with a vacu-

um hose, is to disconnect

the vacuum

line

Two different

fuel

pumps installed

on OMC engines.

Service

on these

two

models is limited

to

removing

the

cover and cleaning

the screen.

from the engine, operate

the squeeze

bulb in

the

fuel

line until

it is firm,

and then

to

carefully

observe

the

end of

the

vacuum

hose to detect

any fuel leakage.

The smal-

lest amount of fuel from the hose indicates
a damaged

diaphragm.

The pump must be

rebuilt to restore

satisfactory

service

of the

pump.

To test

the

non-serviceable

pump,

re-

move the pump from the engine, operate

the

squeeze

bulb until it is firm, and then care-

fully observe

the vacuum

hole in the back

side of the pump for any indication

of fuel.

The

SOl

allest

amount

of

fuel

indicates

a

damaged diaphragm.

In this case, the pump

MUST

be replaced.

PUMP

REMOVAL

AND

REPAIR

Identify

each

hose and its location,

then

disconnect

the

vacuum

hose and t\\70

fuel hoses from the fuel pump.

Remove the

three

attaching

screws securing the pump to

the engine.

Two screws are visible on top of

the pump and the third is hidden behind the
fuel inlet nipple.

pump in a vise,

as

shown.

Loosen the

plastic

screw

securing

the filter

bowI to the pump.

Swing the hinge down and lift the fuel

bowl free

of the

pump.
