To return to configuration mode from a configuration submode, use the
root
command in any supported
configuration submode.
root
Syntax Description
This command has no keywords or arguments.
Defaults
No default behavior or values
Command Modes
Any subconfiguration mode except the following:
•
The
root
command is not available under the route-policy submodes, because it requires the
end-policy
command to exit out of the configuration.
•
The
root
command is not available in template submode, but is available in the submodes
configurable under the template submode.

Usage Guidelines
To use this command, you must be in a user group associated with a task group that includes the proper
task IDs.
Use the
root
command to return directly to configuration mode from any configuration submode.

The following example shows how to use the
root
command to return to configuration mode from the
interface configuration submode:
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:router#
configure
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:router(config)#
interface pos 0/1/0/0
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:router(config-if)#
root
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:router(config)#
The following example shows how to use the
root
command from a submode configurable under the
template submode. In this example, the
root
command is used to return to configuration mode from the
username submode:
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:router#
configure
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:router(config)#
template test
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:router(config-TPL)#
username xyz
