CONVERSION FACTORS

Conversion Factors are constants used to convert measurements in counts per minute (cpm)
to disintegrations per minute (dpm). The CAPTUS

®

600 calculates dpm values by multiplying

the cpm measurement by the Conversion Factor of a particular nuclide. Conversion Factor
values are affected by geometry, detector efficiency, abundance of the gamma energy
peak(s) of the isotope, and the Region of Interest selected for that nuclide.

You can store Conversion Factors for all of the radionuclides already stored in your
CAPTUS

®

600 and for ten additional user-defined radionuclides, and for a “generic” nuclide.

Since some radiation safety regulations require you to document wipe test monitoring results
in dpm units, you should store Conversion Factors for the nuclides that could be present in a
wipe sample.

The CAPTUS

®

600 calculates Conversion Factors by measuring counts (in cpm) from a

calibrated sample of a specific radionuclide. Because the sample is calibrated, the CAPTUS

®

600 can calculate the dpm value of that sample. The CAPTUS

®

600 then divides the dpm

value by the cpm value to determine the Conversion Factor (CF) for that nuclide.
