Safety instructions when working with liquid nitrogen

Avoid spillage of liquid
nitrogen:

When spilled on a surface, liquid nitrogen
tends to cover the surface completely and
cools it immediately.

Rooms need to be well ventilated:

• To be able to prevent excessive nitrogen

gas concentrations from being available.

• Excessive nitrogen gas concentrations

in the air reduce the concentration of
oxygen and can cause asphyxiation.

• Nitrogen gas cannot be detected by

human senses.

• As nitrogen gas is odorless there is the

risk of being inhaled as if it were normal
air.

Avoid skin contact:

Due to the extremely low temperature of
liquid nitrogen (-196°C), any skin contact
can cause severe frostbites.

Wear face shield or
safety goggles:

• The sensitive eye tissue can be dam-

aged if exposed to this cold gas, even if
exposed for a short period of time.

• Use only safety goggles with side

shields.
