You can split a mirror into separate arrays using either:
•
The default settings (see
“Split a Mirror Using the Default Settings”
)
•
The advanced settings, which allow you to specify which drives you want to keep as part of the original
array (see
“Split a Mirror Using the Advanced Split Option”
)
Split a Mirror Using the Default Settings
Mirrors can be split into separate arrays. A RAID1 array when split turns into two Volumes. A RAID10 array
when split turns into two RAID0s. A RAID1n or a RAID10n, when split using the default settings, produces a
Volume and RAID0, respectively. The remainder of a RAID1n, where n is 3, becomes a simple RAID1. The
remainder of a RAID1n, where n is greater than 3, becomes a RAID1n. Similarly, the remainder of a RAID10n
may become a RAID10 or RAID10n depending on the value of n. When an array is split, the portion of the array
split off is hidden from the operating system.
To use default settings to split a RAID1 or RAID10:
1.
Click the array to be split.
2.
From the
Array
menu, select
Mirror
, click
Split
, and then click
Default
.
Split a Mirror Using the Advanced Split Option
For mirrors of type RAID1n or RAID10n, various split combinations are possible using the
Advanced Split
option.
With the
Advanced Split
option, you select the drives you want to keep as part of the original array. Drives
not selected are split to the second array. For example, this allows you to split a four-disk RAID1n into two
RAID1s, or to selectively split mirrors based on which controller or channel the mirror’s disks reside on.
Notes:
•
If there are failed drives in the array, only the non-failed drives will be included in the resulting
Volume, RAID0, RAID1, or RAID10. This will result in fewer arrays than expected.
For example, a critical RAID1 becomes a single Volume. A critical RAID1n (where n = 3) becomes
a Volume and a critical RAID1. Splitting the critical RAID1 again will result in an additional Volume.
•
This action cannot be undone. To remirror, you must transform the array back to a mirror. For
information about transforming arrays, see
“Transforming Arrays” on page 84
.

By default, the split-off array is hidden.

You must select an equal number of disks from each mirror or the split cannot be performed.
