Smart Tachograph EFAS-4.10/4.11
Chapter 11 Repair options
If the tachograph EFAS is damaged mechanically or if the keyboard or the display is defective, then the tachograph must be
replaced completely. Cards which have become stuck can be removed from the device.
11.1
Removing the tachograph
Proceed as follows to remove the EFAS tachograph from the vehicle.
y
Before you remove the EFAS, please insert your workshop smart-card in one of the two card slots and enter your PIN.
y
Loosen the M6 nut on the rear side of the device if fitted.
y
Insert the unlocking clamp in the holes provided on the front side of the device until you can hear it catching.
y
Now pull the tachograph EFAS out of the installation slot.
11.2
Removing a jammed smart-card
If one of the tachograph smart-cards cannot be ejected, insert your workshop smart-card in the vacant card slot. Ignore the card
conflict message reported by the tachograph EFAS after entering your PIN. Backup the data required by law, since you may have
to replace the equipment. Make sure that the tachograph EFAS is in the CALIBRATING operating mode. Now remove the device.
In the process, ensure that the on-board power supply remains connected. Please note that your workshop smart-card must
remain inserted until the repairs on the tachograph EFAS have been completed.
Note
Any violation of the seal must be documented and this documentation must be kept.
Turn the device in such a manner that the base plate faces towards you. Remove the gasket on the rear side of the front panel
and pull the gasket until it is over the cable loom. Remove the base plate seal using an appropriate tool. Remove all residues of
the seal before unscrewing the TORX screw (T10). Please ensure that the seal holder and the screw do not get misplaced. Lever
the base plate away from the housing by inserting an 8 mm screwdriver between the base plate and the housing at the rear of
the device and turning it by 90°.
The base plate is latched behind the front panel. For removal, it must be raised upwards by 90° as illustrated in Figure 12. You
can then remove the base plate and expose the underside of the device. Also see section 6.2.6.
With the base plate removed the card reader is visible.

card in the direction of the coil.
