9.2
Preparatory actions
9.2.1
Visual inspection
Prior to the actual inspection of the digital recording equipment, it is recommended to inspect the front of the tachograph first
to check for visible damage before removing the digital tachograph.
9.2.2
Inspection of the seals and installation plaque
After visual inspection of the front of the tachograph EFAS, other preliminary checks must be performed with respect to:
y
The installation plaque being intact
y
Plausibility of the data on the installation plaque
y
Proper condition of the seals (tachograph, sensor/tacho shaft and all removable electrical and mechanical connections)
y
Proper condition of the lines between the tachograph and motion sensor
y
The components of the tachograph being intact (missing components, foreign objects, etc.)
If the line to the motion sensor cannot be visually checked for manipulation, it is possible to open the seals and lay a temporary
line between both components and to perform a quick functional inspection on the tachograph EFAS. It may not be necessary
to carry out a new pairing with the motion sensor. After performing the functional inspection, you must reconnect the line
installed and reseal it.
9.2.3
Data read-out
Data is read out using the workshop’s own resources via the service interface of the tachograph.
Note
Please keep the corresponding manual of the data readout system at hand. Observe and comply with the
applicable regulations.
Note
Since the Tachograph EFAS is always delivered in a non-activated state, the device does not record any data in
the mass memory in this state.
9.2.4
Check internal buffer battery
If the Tachograph was last checked more than 12 months ago, you must change the internal buffer battery of the tachograph.
The date of the last check can be found on the installation plaque.
9.3
Test equipment
Suitable test equipment is required in order to calibrate the EFAS tachograph. It should be possible to calibrate the recording
equipment and set the legally prescribed parameters with any testing equipment that is certified for such testing (in Germany
in accordance with § 57b StVZO). Moreover, additional standardized parameters can generally be read and written using the
testing equipment, and the error memory of the device can be read out and reset. Many testing devices also support the special
functions of the EFAS tachograph. Should you experience any problems with your testing equipment when performing diag-
nostic or calibration work in connection with the EFAS device, please contact the manufacturer of the testing equipment or ask
our sales partners for more information.
Note
Please have the appropriate documentation of your testing equipment ready. Please observe all currently valid
legal regulations. Only use equipment that is approved for inspections.
9.4
Calibrating the EFAS
Before calibration a check should be made to ensure that all components have been properly installed and no manipulation
has taken place.
The connector between motion sensor and EFAS must not be branched. If it is not possible to perform a sight check on this
connection for possible branches, a temporary test connection can be installed between the motion sensor and the tacho-
graph. For this purpose the motion sensor and the recording equipment must be disconnected from the installed cable and
temporarily connected with another, unbranched cable. The pairing process of the motion sensor with the tachograph is then
launched manually.
Note
The pairing of the motion sensor with the tachograph has to be started manually at each calibration.
Once this process has terminated, the original cable can be reconnected. The system, consisting of motion sensor and tacho-
graph, should then be immediately ready for operation with the installed without having to be paired again.
Calibration takes place during one a test run in accordance with legal regulations of for example on a roller test bench in
the workshop or during one of the test runs in accordance with legal regulations. The data generated during calibration is
