Step 6:
Installing gear subassembly in case and adjust.
a. Carefully install subassembly (1) with toothed
end of cross shaft (A) toward the inside of case
(2).
NOTE
Shaft should be supported with blocking.
b. Install bearing cones (3 and 4) on cross shaft.

c. If removed, press bearing cups (5 and 6) into
bearing caps (7 and 8).
d. Install bearing caps with shim packs (9 and 10).
Start with 0.070" (1.78 mm) on outside, and
0.040" (1.01 mm) shim pack on inside. Do not
install O-rings (11 and 12) until final case
assembly.
e. Install 4 cap screws (13 and 14) in each bearing
cap 90
°
apart. Do not use thread sealant on cap
screws until final case assembly.
f. Install dial indicator.

g. Push shaft fully in one direction, set the dial
indicator to zero, and then pull shaft in opposite
direction. Note reading.
h. Add 0.007" (0.178 mm) to reading above. Divide
the result by 2 and subtract this amount of
shimming from both the inside (9) and outside
(10) shim packs.
i. This completes ring gear assembly and adjust-
ments.
