Router Interfaces and Backplane Rings in a
Model 5000 Chassis
Split Backplane Operation
A chassis configured for split backplane operation supports a maximum of nine
backplane token rings. For a module installed in slots 1 through 7 of the chassis,
router interfaces 1, 2, and 3 use backplane rings 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Interface
4 can be set to ring 4 or 5. For a module installed in slots 8 through 14, router
interfaces 1, 2, and 3 use backplane rings 6, 7, and 8, respectively. Interface 4 can
be set to ring 9 or 5 (see Figure 3-19). Because backplane ring 5 is the only ring
that guarantees access to token ring modules in all 14 slots, its best use is
monitoring and acquiring network data.
Note:
If you have a router module attached to a PPX backplane, you can only
access rings 1, 2, 3, and 4 of a split token ring backplane from slots 6 and 7.
