Hot-Swapping Capability

You can insert or remove the router modules from a chassis without interrupting 
service to other modules within the System 5000 hub. If the replacement router is 
the same model as the module that was removed and is installed in the same slot, 
the replacement module will pick up the backplane segment or ring connection 
and backplane ring speed configuration data from the supervisory module board. 
Additional setup activities to bring the module online are not necessary. 

PPX Connection

The PPX backplane is a quadruple redundant bus with four independent parallel 
paths that perform at 1 Gb/s between router interfaces.

You can install the Ethernet and token ring routers in a Model 5000AH chassis 
and connect them to the backplane through the parallel packet express (PPX) 
interconnection. The PPX backplane interconnection performs packet transfers 
from one router installed in the chassis to another router installed in the same 
chassis. In the Model 5000AH chassis, multiple routers interconnect via the PPX 
backplane to work as a single large router. You can install up to four routers in a 
Model 5000AH chassis. Only one software image on a memory card is needed to 
operate all the router modules connected to the PPX backplane.

If you have a Model 5000 chassis that does not contain a PPX backplane, you can 
order a PPX backplane upgrade kit.

Warning: 

If the replacement router is not exactly the same model as the one 

that was removed, the network will not automatically resume operation when 
the new router is installed.
