Connecting a Terminal to the Service Port
To connect a terminal to the System 5000 chassis service port, you need the
following equipment:
•
A TTY-compatible terminal or a portable computer with a serial port and the
ability to emulate a TTY-compatible terminal.
•
An RS-232 modem cable with a female DB-9 connector to connect to
the service port on the chassis front panel. The cable uses the service port pin
assignments specified in Installation and Reference for the Model 5000
Chassis.
The other end of the cable must have a connector appropriate to the serial port
on your computer or terminal. (Most terminals or computers use a male DB-9
or DB-25 connector.)
To connect the terminal to the chassis service port:
1.
Turn on the terminal; adjust contrast and brightness as required.
2.
Set the terminal communication parameters as follows:
•
9600 baud (default)
•
8 data bits
•
No parity
•
1 stop bit
•
No handshaking
•
Standard ASCII code
3.
Connect the RS-232 cable from the service port of the System 5000
chassis to the terminal’s communication port (see
Figure 3-1
).
Note:
Use TFTP to transfer files to a memory card. The System 5000 chassis
service port is not transparent to control codes. You cannot make file transfers
through this port (unlike the console port on a standalone Bay Networks
router).
