How Trumpet Graphs Can be Used

Trumpet Curve graphs can be important sources of information for the medical professional who must decide
whether a certain infusion pump can be used with a particular medication. For example, when delivering a
medication with a short half-life, very small deviations in flow over the course of an infusion would be
desirable to ensure that the deviations in plasma level also remained small. The device’s ability to deliver
very closely to the programmed rate would ensure that the medication’s efficacy was being maintained. In
this example, the medical professional would be wise to select a device whose trumpet curve indicated a
small or narrow range of deviations in flow rate.
