8.2 Final Alignment
Warning
Eye and face protection must be worn when looking into hot gases.
8.2.1 Retro-reflector Alignment
1) The instruments should be mounted and roughly aligned by the methods
previously described. Adjustment nuts must not be over tightened.
2) The fan/blowers and system air purges should be fully operational.
3) Power should be already supplied to the transmissometer.
4) Remove the two securing screws securing the plate on top of the retro-
reflector unit. Lift up to remove plate from retro-reflector.
Note
Observe the two alignment sighting tubes secured behind plate.
5) 1st level - Look through the aperture on the front of the retro-reflector and
adjust the nuts X and Y (shown in Fig. 7-1) until the flashing light from
the transmissometer is centrally aligned (see note). Nut X adjusts the
horizontal while nut Y adjusts the vertical position of the spot. The third nut
should only be used to adjust tension.
Make sure the spring washers are only under moderate tension: if the
tension becomes excessive it is very likely that the third nut has been over
tightened or the mounting flange may not have been fitted accurately.
6) 2nd level - Remove the shorter of the two alignment tubes from the cover
plate. Re-check and refine the alignment by viewing through the short tube
and using the procedure described in the last paragraph. Replace the short
alignment tube onto the retro-reflector cover plate.
7) 3rd level - Remove the longer of the two alignment tubes from the cover
plate. Re-check and refine the alignment further by viewing through the
long tube and using the procedure described in the last paragraph. Replace
the long alignment tube onto the retro-reflector cover plate. Replace the
retro-reflector plate back into the retro-reflector unit.
8) Check all the adjusting nuts are under tension. The retro-reflector unit is
now aligned.
Note
If no flashing light is visible it is possible the transmissometer is
grossly misaligned or the instrument is malfunctioning.
