2.6 Communication
The communication options of Windows CE devices and the necessary configurations are explained in detail
in the following chapters.
2.6.1 Serial / RS232
The mobile devices can use serial interfaces by connecting to docking stations and vehicle holders. The
following options are available:
Device
Interface(s)
Connection via
M210SE
M215SE
COM5 virtual serial interface
DS210 / DS260 vehicle mount,
version with USB-RS232 converter
M260SE
COM5 and COM6 virtual serial interfaces
An external USB interface is available on the devices. If the device is inserted into a vehicle mount with
integrated USB RS232 converter, a virtual COM5 interface is created using the driver and is maintained for
the plug-in contact and can be used by a program.
On the M260SE, the virtual COM6 interface is also created.
The existing serial interfaces can be used directly by applications.
ACD applications use for example the direct RS232 communication with the ZMODEM protocol. Network
and Dial-up Connections can also be installed for indirect serial communication, e.g. via an ActiveSync
connection.
More information on both functions will be provided in the following chapters.
2.6.2 IrDA
The mobile M210SE and M215SE devices feature an IrDAinterface.
COM port 4 maps the virtual serial interface of the IrDA protocol. ActiveSync can also be connected via IrDA.
2.6.3 USB
All devices feature external USB interfaces (master and/or slave). They can be used by inserting the device
into a docking station. The M260SE features one USB port which can be a master or slave or switched
automatically as required (USB-OTG).
