connect several segments together. Even when connecting multiple segments together
with repeaters, every segment must have a terminator on each end.
Single port repeaters can extend the total length and distance of the entire network
span by joining in series a maximum of five SL segments, or three EL segments, with a
repeater between each of the segments. That makes a maximum of four repeaters for
SL segments, or two repeaters for EL segments. Refer to the following figure,
"
Repeater to Extend Network Span
".

interconnecting components and products described in this appendix.
When extending the length of the network span, the five SL segment and three EL
segment maximums assume that the maximum length-per-segment is used on each
segment. If this is not the case, then the entire network can have more than the
maximum of five and three segments respectively, but must not exceed the maximum
total network span of 925 meters (3050 feet) for SL segments and 900 meters
(2950 feet) for EL segments. The maximum distance between any two nodes on the
network can be equal to these maximum network spans.
Multi-port repeaters can expand the number of nodes on the network in a certain locality
by increasing the number of segments that have the same signal repeating origination.
Refer to the "
Repeater to Increase Segment Quantity
" figure following. In this
configuration, the multi-port repeater does not have to be at the end of each of the
segments. Because the repeater is not used to extend the overall network span, the
repeater can be inserted anywhere in the segment.
