B. NETWORK COMPONENTS AND CABLING
This appendix describes the cabling types and connection methods used for Thin Coax,
Thick Coax, and Twisted-Pair Ethernet cabling options. It also includes support for fiber
optic cable connection. Use this section in conjunction with Appendix C, "
Network
Interconnection
," which details in table form the allowable interconnection parameters
and specifications for these standards. Refer to the "
Sample Network Solution Diagram
"
in Appendix C for a sample network solution diagram.
ETHERNET OPTIONS SUMMARY
The ZT 8995 Ethernet card provides support for several different types of media
interfaces to other Ethernet systems. Each type of medium differs in the communication
substance or cable used for the transmission and reception of data on the Local Area
Network. These media types are:
•
Thin coax
•
Thick coax
•
Twisted-pair
•
Fiber optic
They all have different cabling methods and specifications and each has its own
advantages.
Thin and Thick Ethernet options use a bus topology, while Twisted-Pair Ethernet and
fiber optic cabling use a star topology. Due to the increased cabling costs, fiber optic is
not generally implemented at the node itself (as are thin, thick and twisted-pair).
Instead, fiber optic is commonly supported as a medium for interconnecting segments of
the network to avoid noise and cross-talk and to accomplish an overall longer network
distance or span.

interconnecting components and products described in this appendix.
Thin Ethernet
Thin Ethernet cabling (10Base2) is the simplest and least expensive approach to
Ethernet. It maintains the same data rate as Thick Ethernet but limits distance and
number of nodes. Thin Ethernet uses connector J4 on the ZT 8995-D2 frontplane, which
is a female BNC type connector. Refer to the figure "
Frontplane Connectors
". A coaxial
transceiver interface on board the ZT 8995-D2 links the driver/receiver with the external
thin type coax cable.
