Thick Ethernet "T" Connectors and Terminators
50 ohm terminators at each end of the Thick Ethernet trunk segment keep the correct
amount of signal reflection on line during the data communication.

Proper termination is essential to maintaining a balanced network. The importance of
proper termination is underscored in the definition of a network segment: a segment
length is defined as the distance from one terminated end of the cable to the other
terminated end.
T connectors generally are not used on a Thick Ethernet segment except with certain
MAUs that splice into the thick coax with N-type connectors instead of tapping into the
cable with non-intrusive taps. The next section describes the MAU.
Thick Ethernet Media Attachment Units
The transceiver MAU is usually a small box with two connectors, one male 15-pin D
connector with locking posts (IEEE retention standard) and one coax cable tap
connector. The male 15-pin D connects to the female 15-pin D on the AUI drop cable as
described in the "
Thick Ethernet Cabling
" topic. The tap connector typically is either an
intrusive tap, which splices with T connectors into point-to-point cables similar to
Thin Ethernet
, or a non-intrusive tap, which pierces through the insulation and shield of
the thick cable trunk to make contact with the solid cable conductor.
