3. THEORY OF OPERATION
This chapter presents a high-level look at how the ZT 8995 functions. It includes
sections covering commonly asked questions, the STD interface, Ethernet interface,
and diagnostic LEDs. The "
Functional Diagram
" figure illustrates the basic functional
blocks of the ZT 8995.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
•
What are the differences between Ethernet and IEEE 802.3?
–
Ethernet from Xerox specifies 50 ohm coax cabling only. IEEE 802.3 (also called
Ethernet) specifies different types of coax, twisted-pair and fiber optic cabling.
–
Transceiver connection signals are slightly different. The AUI transceiver cable
must match the DB15 connector found on the interface. Some transceivers
provide jumpers for either connection. The ZT 8995 is an IEEE 802.3 compliant
interface.
–
The data frame formats are incompatible. Fortunately, most network operating
systems and application programs can be configured for Ethernet or IEEE 802.3
data packets. The ZT 8995 hardware is compatible with IEEE 802.3.
•
What cable media is available for Ethernet?
–
Media types range from thin coax (Thin Ethernet, Cheapernet) to thick coax
(Ethernet, IEEE 802.3), twisted-pair wiring, and fiber optic cable. Appendix B
describes each interconnection medium in more detail.
–
Media types determine network topology (star, bus). Media types can be mixed.
Appendix C illustrates a complex network consisting of various cable media.
•
What are the differences between Ethernet and Thin Ethernet?
–
Thin Ethernet uses low cost RG58 coax cable. Ethernet uses a more expensive
Teflon™ coated, double shielded coax cable. Teflon cable is used in
environments in which fire is possible, as ordinary coax cable releases
dangerous cyanide gas when it burns.
–
Thin Ethernet allows network spans of 900 meters with segment lengths of
185 meters. Ethernet allows network spans of 2500 meters with segment lengths
of 500 meters.
–
Both use 50 ohm cable and termination operating at 10 Mbps.
–
Twisted-pair Ethernet (TPI) also known as 10BaseT uses inexpensive telephone
wiring that may already be installed in many applications. An RJ-45 connector
