White Balance:
To adjust the color temperature, select White Balance from the Picture
Adjust menu. (Color temperature defines the “color of gray.”) These controls enable you to
calibrate the grayscale color temperature at input levels of 100, 80, 50, 30 and 20 IRE, with
either external or internally-generated window patterns, independently for each input.
This feature is intended for fine-tuning the grayscale after the display device grayscale color
temperature has been calibrated. Vidikron recommends that you calibrate the display device
at 100 and 30 IRE using its internal grayscale calibration controls before adjusting the white
balance on the VDP-80-720.
This feature operates like the grayscale calibration in projectors, except that there are five
calibration points (100, 80, 50, 30 and 20 IRE) instead of just two. If the display device service
codes are not known, the system grayscale can still be calibrated.
For Inputs 3 and 4, you can have the VDP-80-720 perform an auto-calibration for white
balance. To use this feature:
1.
Select a 100 IRE “window” pattern on your external test pattern source.
2.
Press
MENU 0 9 2 6
or
MENU 0 9 6 6
on the remote control.
3.
Press
OK
to begin the auto-calibration.
4.
When the message “CALIBRATION COMPLETED” appears on-screen, press
EXIT
.
For manual white balance calibration, keep the following guidelines in mind:
•
Use the up- or down-arrow buttons (
,
) to select a calibration point (IRE). To use the
VDP-80-720 internal window patterns, select 100T, 80T, 50T, 30T or 20T.
•
Use the left- or right-arrow buttons (
,
) to select a color channel. (LUMA is a weighted
average of the three primary color channels.)
•
Use the up- or down-arrow buttons (
,
) to make color channel adjustments.
•
Keep the LUMA value at the respective calibration point level (100, 80, 50, 30 or 20) for a
standard, linear response through the VDP-80-720. For example, if you increase the Green
level by two “clicks” to correct the color temperature, select LUMA and “down-click” it
once to put the LUMA value back to the correct level.
As another example, if 100 IRE must be corrected, the LUMA level out can no longer reach
100 IRE because it is a weighted average of red, green and blue. If the calibrated 100 IRE
point has a LUMA value of 2 per cent less than 100 (98), reduce the LUMA for 80, 50, 30 and
20 IRE by 2 per cent -- to 78, 49, 29 and 20 in this case -- to keep a linear response through
the VDP-80-720.
•
You can also use the LUMA setting to change the gamma curve on an input. However,
Vidikron recommends that you maintain a linear gamma. Proper gamma adjustment
requires highly specialized equipment and training, and can easily degrade picture quality
if done improperly.
To reset the white balance settings to the factory default values, use the right-arrow button
to select DEFAULT and press
OK
.
You must enable Service Mode before you can access the White Balance
controls. To do this, press
MENU 8 6 4 2
on the remote control.
Whenever possible, use a test pattern from the source device rather than
the VDP-80-720 internal patterns. This calibrates the entire signal path,
including the source’s output circuitry and the VDP-80-720 TV decoder.
