STORING MATERIALS
Stratasys FDM thermoplastic materials will maintain proper product performance over an extended period of
time, when handled and stored according to recommended procedures. Like other thermoplastics, the filament
can absorb moisture when exposed to ambient humidity. Stratasys material spools are designed to minimize
moisture exposure while unopened and opened. When a spool’s filament absorbs moisture a finished part's
surface quality, seam quality, and overall part aesthetics can be affected. Care should be taken to ensure
filament remains dry.
Two model material spool sizes are available. Standard model material spools hold 60 in
3
(984 cc) of filament
while large spools hold 90 in
3
(1475 cc). One support material spool size is available. Support material spools
hold 60 in
3
(984 cc) of filament.
Material spools also contain desiccant material; the desiccant is designed to maintain proper moisture levels for
an unopened spool. Once the desiccant is exposed to ambient air, it can become saturated and ineffective for
moisture control. Proper handling of the spool after it has been opened is essential to maximizing material life. A
plastic bag provides an airtight seal to keep moisture from entering the material spool while stored.
If a material spool with material remaining on the spool is removed from the printer, it should be stored within
one of the airtight bags provided within the Welcome Kit. Prior to placing the material spool into the bag, ensure
that the spool’s filament is securely snapped into place within one of the filament tail capture locations on the
edge of the spool.
Caution:
Material storage shall be in the range of 55°F to 86°F (13°C to 30°C),
with relative humidity less than 70%.
Caution:
A material spool should not remain outside of a sealed container for
longer than 1 minute. A foil bag or a material bay are examples of acceptable
containers.
