Battery maintenance
DANGER
Incorrect handling or incorrect use of batteries and
chargers can cause serious damage. This can also
lead to serious hazards for the operator.
For each type of battery, the instructions provided
by the battery manufacturer regarding proper use,
care and maintenance, as well as the possible ha-
zards for the operator, must be followed precisely.
Lead-acid batteries, gel batteries and lithium-
ion batteries are currently used.
NOTE
•
Battery maintenance is not part of the
regular maintenance
•
Battery maintenance must be carried out
according to the information provided by the
relevant battery manufacturer
•
If the battery male connector is disconnec-
ted while a consumer is switched on, the
contacts can combust
Lead-acid batteries
Lead-acid batteries use liquid acid. The acid
can be easily accessed and can therefore be
dangerous.
DANGER
The electrolyte (battery acid) is toxic and corrosive
on contact. For newly charged batteries in particu-
lar, be aware of the risk of explosion in the area of
the battery where gas may be released.
When handling battery acid, the specified safety
measures must be observed.
Gel batteries
Gel batteries are a particular type of lead-acid
battery. The usage instructions and handling
instructions from the respective manufacturer
must be observed.
Li-ion batteries
To ensure safe operation, industrial trucks
that are powered by Li-ion batteries must be
equipped with a battery management system.
The operators of such industrial trucks must be
instructed in the operation of Li-ion batteries
and the charging systems for these batteries.
Battery maintenance
The battery is the energy source for the
industrial truck. It must therefore be handled
carefully!
General daily maintenance tasks
Keep the battery clean and dry.
Charge the battery regularly.
Avoid deep discharge.
Visually check the insulation on the cable
connections and battery female connector.
Check the condition of the battery connection
assembly and check that it is working cor-
rectly.
Additional maintenance work for lead-acid
batteries
Check the electrolyte level. If necessary, top
up with demineralised water.
Spilt electrolyte must be siphoned off from the
battery tray using a siphon. Rinse the tray if
necessary.
