Operation

Switching on and off

WARNING

: Always wear safety goggles, an adequate dust mask, hearing protection and

suitable gloves, when working with this tool.

WARNING

: Never switch the sander on when the base is in contact with the workpiece or

any other surface, as this might cause the operator to lose control over the machine, and
lead to serious injury.

1.  Connect the sander to the mains power supply
2.  Push the On/Off Switch (1) on the side marked ‘I’, to switch the sander on
3.  To switch the sander off, push the on/off switch on the side marked ‘O’

WARNING

: Always wait until the machine has stopped vibrating completely before putting

it down. Always disconnect from the power supply after use.

Changing the sanding sheet (hook and loop)

WARNING: Always switch off and disconnect from the power supply before changing the
sanding sheet.

1.  Remove an old hook and loop sanding sheet, if fitted, by peeling it away from the

machine’s hook and loop Sanding Base (4)

2.  Clean any dust or debris from the hook and loop sanding base
3.  Align the dust extraction holes in the new sanding sheet with those of the base, and

press the sheet firmly in place

Changing the sanding sheet (conventional non-hook-and-

loop sanding sheets)

WARNING

: Always switch off and disconnect from the power supply before changing the

sanding sheet.

1.  Release the Quick-Change Levers for Conventional Sanding Sheets (6) from both

sides of the Sanding Base (4). Remove any old sanding sheet

2.  Clean any dust or debris from the sanding base and lever mechanisms
3.  Align the dust extraction holes in the new sanding sheet with the holes of the

sanding base

4.  Fit one side of the sheet under one of the quick-change levers and close the lever
5.  Push the other end of the sanding sheet under the quick-change lever on the

opposite side of the sanding base. Push the sheet so it sits tightly in line with the
base, and close the second lever

WARNING

: If the sanding sheet is not tightly clamped over the Sanding Base (4), it will

wear excessively. Always make sure the sanding base is completely covered by the
sanding sheets, as you might otherwise cause damage to the surface of the base and
the workpiece.

Note

: If you are using conventional, non-hook-and-loop sanding sheets with no punched

holes, the dust extraction system of this sander WILL NOT FUNCTION. Use a suitable tool
to manually punch holes through the sanding sheet, exactly where the dust extraction
holes in the base of the sander are located. Take care not to damage the hook and loop
surface of the base.

Selecting the right grade of sanding sheet

Note: This sander is supplied with a variety of different grit sanding sheets. Always
use good quality sanding sheets to maximise the quality of the finished task. Always
test the sander on a scrap piece of material to determine whether the sanding sheet
is suitable for the intended task:
•  Coarse (60 grit) for use on rough material
•  Medium (120 grit) for smoothing off
•  Fine (240 grit) for finishing
Note: DO NOT use sanding sheets designed for wet sanding.
Sanding
WARNING

: Always wear safety goggles, an adequate dust mask, hearing protection and

suitable gloves, when working with this sander.

Note

: DO NOT continue to use worn, torn, or heavily clogged sanding sheets. Ensure

foreign objects, such as nails and screws, are removed from the workpiece before
commencing sanding.

WARNING

: DO NOT use a sanding sheet on wood that has previously been used on metal.

This may cause scouring on the wooden surface.  DO NOT use this sander for sanding
magnesium, or for wet sanding.

WARNING

: NEVER touch the moving sanding sheet.

Note: Always use clamps to secure your workpiece to the workbench wherever possible.

1.  Grip the Palm Grip Handle (2) firmly, and switch the sander on
2.  Move the machine in a circular motion over the workpiece surface, applying an even,

moderate pressure (Fig. D). until you reach the desired surface finish

Note:

Apply moderate pressure only. Excess pressure will not lead to a faster removal of

material, but will damage the sanding sheet and the machine.

3.  If there are still scratches on your workpiece after sanding, try either of the following:

•  Return to a coarser grit sanding sheet and sand the marks out before recommencing

with the original choice of sanding sheet or,

•  Try using a new sanding sheet of the same grit to eliminate the unwanted marks before

progressing to a finer grit and finishing the job

WARNING:

Do not allow the sandpaper to completely wear down before replacing it.

Failure to observe these precautionary measures can lead to damage to the hook and loop
surfaces, resulting in sanding sheets failing to attach properly.

Emptying the dust extraction canister

WARNING:

Always switch off and disconnect from the power supply before cleaning or

carrying out maintenance.

1.  Rotate the Dust Extraction Canister (5) anti-clockwise and disconnect it from the

machine

2.  Empty dust from inside the connector and clean the bayonet fitting
3.  Open the dust canister housing by holding the bayonet connector in one hand and

pulling off the slotted plastic cover with the other hand

4.  Remove the internal dust bag, empty out, clean and inspect for damage.

WARNING:

The dust extraction system cannot function correctly when the internal dust

bag has holes or is otherwise damaged. Replace if there is evidence of damage.

5.  Refit the dust bag onto the bag holder, ensuring that the elastic band of the dust bag

sits inside the groove at the base of the bag holder

6.  Reinstall the plastic cover and fit the dust canister to the machine (as described in

‘Connecting the dust extraction system’)

Accessories

•  A full range of sanding sheets and accessories is available from your Silverline dealer

Maintenance

WARNING:

Always disconnect from the power supply before carrying out any inspection,

maintenance or cleaning.

General inspection

•  Regularly check that all the fixing screws are tight. They may vibrate loose over time
•  Inspect the supply cord of the tool, prior to each use, for damage or wear. Repairs

should be carried out by an authorised Silverline service centre. This advice also applies
to extension cords used with this tool

Cleaning

•  Keep your tool clean at all times. Dirt and dust will cause internal parts to wear quickly,

and shorten the machine’s service life. Clean the body of your machine with a soft
brush, or dry cloth. If available, use clean, dry, compressed air to blow through the
ventilation holes

•  Clean the tool casing with a soft damp cloth using a mild detergent. Do not use alcohol,

petrol or strong cleaning agents

•  Never use caustic agents to clean plastic parts

Hook and loop surfaces

•  Hook and loop surfaces need to be clean, free of dirt and foreign matter, such as hair,

fibres, sand etc.

•  In order to provide adequate adhesion for securing accessories, hook and loop surfaces

must be in good condition

•  When used extensively, hooks and loops will become elongated or broken, and the

mechanism will be unable to provide the required strength of adhesion

Note:

This sander’s hook and loop Sanding Base (4) is NOT a warranty item. Replacement

plates can be fitted at an authorised Silverline service centre.

Storage

•  Store this tool carefully in a secure, dry place, out of the reach of children

Disposal

Always adhere to national regulations when disposing of power tools that are no longer
functional and are not viable for repair.
•  Do not dispose of power tools, or other waste electrical and electronic equipment

(WEEE), with household waste

•  Contact your local waste disposal authority for information on the correct  way to

dispose of power tools
