Charging the battery

WARNING

: Failure to follow the correct procedure when charging the batteries will result

in permanent damage.

Note

: Normal charging time is 3-5 hours for a recently fully-discharged battery, but if

the Battery has been left in a discharged state for some time, it may take extended time
to charge.
1. Slide a discharged or partially discharged Battery into the Battery Charger (13)
2. Both the Green LED (15) and Red LED (16) will flash to show the Battery is being

assessed by the charger

3. Once charging commences, both LEDs will illuminate without flashing
4. When the Battery is fully charged only the Green LED will be illuminated

Note

: If both LEDs are not constantly illuminated after the charger has assessed the

Battery (7), this indicates a fault condition. Recheck the Battery is fully inserted in the
Battery Charger and connecting with the Battery Contacts (14). Remove any material that
may have fallen into the battery socket of the Battery Charger and make sure the contacts
of both the Battery and the Battery Charger Unit are clean, untarnished metal and not
damaged or bent.

Notes about battery charging:

•  The Battery (7) should be charged at ambient temperatures between 10 and 40°C

(ideally around 20°C)

•  After charging, allow 15 minutes for the battery to cool before use
•  Ensure that the charger is disconnected from the mains supply after use, and is stored

correctly

•  DO NOT leave batteries on charge for extended periods and NEVER store batteries on

charge

•  The Battery Charger (13) monitors battery temperature and voltage while charging.

Remove the Battery once charging has been completed to maximise charge cycles of
the battery and not waste power

•  Batteries can become faulty over time, individual cells in the battery can fail, and the

battery could short. The charger will not charge faulty batteries. Use another battery,
if possible, to check correct functionality of the charger and purchase a replacement
battery if a faulty battery is indicated

•  DO NOT store Lithium-ion battery packs in a discharged state long term. This can

damage the Lithium-ion cells. For long-term storage, store batteries in a high charge
state disconnected from the power tool

•  The capacity of batteries will reduce over time. After 100 charge cycles, the battery’s

operation time and the maximum torque performance of the drill will slightly reduce.
This decline will continue until the battery has minimal capacity after 500 charge cycles.
This is normal and not a fault with the battery pack

Fitting drill bits and accessories

WARNING

: Always remove the Battery from the drill before attaching, adjusting or

removing accessories.

WARNING

: Do not attempt to tighten drill bits (or any other accessory) by gripping the

Chuck Collar (2) and switching the tool on. This can lead to personal injury and can cause
damage to the chuck.

WARNING

: Never fit any attachment with a maximum speed lower than the no-load speed

of the power tool or selected gear.
1.  Open the Chuck Jaws (1) by rotating the Chuck Collar (2) anti-clockwise (with the chuck

facing the operator)

2.  Place the drill bit or accessory into the Chuck Jaws correctly centralised
3.  Tighten the Chuck Jaws by rotating the Chuck Collar clockwise
4.  When the drill bit or accessory is securely fastened, carefully run the machine to test

that it is running centrally, smoothly and evenly. If the bit is 'wobbling' or not running
centrally, release the Chuck Jaws, check the accessory for damage, correct its position,
retighten and test again

Operation

Direction control

WARNING

: NEVER change the direction of rotation while the tool is running.

•  The direction of rotation can be set using the Forward/Reverse Switch (5)
•  For anti-clockwise rotation, holding the drill in a normal operating position, push the

switch to the right

•  For clockwise rotation, push the switch to the left

Note

: When the Forward/Reverse Switch is in the central position, the drill is locked and

cannot be switched on. Use this setting as a safety feature to prevent the drill from being
switched on accidentally.

Torque control and mode selection

This drill is fitted with a Torque Selector (3). This controls the torque output of the drill,
enabling screws to be driven without the risk of damage to the screw head or workpiece if
set correctly. A clutch within the tool will slip once the maximum torque is reached. There
are 16 torque settings and a drill mode.

•  The higher the torque setting chosen, the higher the amount of torque available. Select
the correct setting for the screw size you are driving. Over time you will get to know the
required setting for the type and size of screw
•  The Torque Selector is numbered and has gaps in-between the printed numbers to give
  the full 16 settings
•  Rotate the Torque Selector ring to select the correct torque
•  For drill mode, rotate the Torque Selector to the drill symbol   . This will lock the clutch
  out for maximum torque

Switching on/off

WARNING

: Always wear adequate personal protection equipment when setting up and

operating this machine.
1.  To start the drill, squeeze the Trigger Switch (10)

Note

: If the Trigger Switch cannot be pressed down, check that the Forward/Reverse

Switch (5) is not set to its middle position, which locks the device (see “Direction control”).
2.  The speed of the drill is controlled by the movement of the trigger: the further the trigger

is pressed down, the faster the drill will run

3.  Release the Trigger Switch to stop the machine

Note

: A built-in LED Work Light (11) will operate each time the Trigger Switch is pressed to

illuminate the work area.

Screwdriver use

Note

: Use a universal bit holder (not supplied) when working with screwdriver bits. Only

mount screwdriver bits directly into the chuck if it is essential to access a screw head. Use
a bit holder at all other times.
•  When driving screws NEVER use the machine in drill mode. This will protect the motor

by causing the clutch to slip rather than the motor to stall when the screw is fully
inserted in the workpiece and cannot rotate any further

•  Always adjust the drill to the appropriate torque setting (see ‘Drill mode selection’ &

‘Torque control’)

Note

: If in doubt about which torque setting best suits the application, start with a low

setting and increase, should more torque be required (e.g. if the screw is not being driven
far enough into the workpiece).

Drilling wood

WARNING

: The dust produced from working with some materials can be toxic.

Beech, oak, mahogany and teak natural woods, man-made composite woods and some
surface treatments, including paint with lead, are toxic. Lead-based paint is common in
buildings built before 1960. Always wear suitable respiratory protection; for example, a
respirator face mask. Use a dust extraction system or regularly vacuum the work area to
prevent the build-up of dust. In addition, vacuum the work area after the work has been
completed. Most dust is a fire hazard. Overhead work surfaces have an increased safety
risk for dust.
•  Select drill mode   with the with the Torque Selector (3)
•  Ensure that drill bits are suitable for wood, and are within the maximum capacity of this

power tool (see ‘Specification’)

Drilling metal

•  Select drill mode   with the Torque Selector (3)
•  Ensure that drill bits are suitable for the grade of metal being drilled and are within the

maximum capacity of the machine (see “Specification”)

•  To ensure accuracy, mark the intended hole position using a hammer and centre punch

WARNING

: The drill bit and the workpiece will become very hot when drilling metal. DO

NOT touch the bit and never allow it to come into contact with combustible materials when
hot. Always use a suitable lubricant or cutting fluid, and drill at appropriate speeds.
•  Only apply moderate pressure to the drill bit, ensuring efficient cutting and prolonged

drill bit life

•  Use a countersink bit to remove sharp burrs from the hole, preventing cuts and other

kinds of injury

Accessories

•  A full range of accessories, including drill bits, screwdriver bits, wire brushes etc, is

available from your Silverline dealer. Spare batteries can be ordered through your
Silverline dealer or toolsparesonline.com.
