•  The depth of cut is adjusted by turning the Depth Adjustment Handle (14)
•  The Depth Adjustment Handle features a scale, indicating the cutting depth in millimetres.

Line up the desired cutting depth with the arrow mark on the tool housing

Operation

WARNING:

ALWAYS wear eye protection, adequate respiratory and hearing protection, as well as

suitable gloves, when working with this tool.

Switching on and off

WARNING:

NEVER switch on the planer when the blades are in contact with the workpiece or

any other surface, as this might cause the operator to lose control over the machine, and lead to

serious injury.

1.  Connect the planer to the mains power supply
2.  Hold the tool safely by the Main Handle (4) and Depth Adjustment Handle (14)
3.  Push the Safety Lock-Off Button (5) and then pull the On/Off Trigger Switch (6) upward to

start the planer. Release the On/Off Trigger Switch to stop the machine

Planing

1.  Adjust the planing depth as required (see ‘Adjusting the cutting depth’)
2.  Hold the tool safely by the Main Handle (4) and Depth Adjustment Handle (14)
3.  Rest the front of the planer on the workpiece, ensuring the blades are not in contact with the

workpiece

4.  Switch on the tool and wait for the blades to reach full speed
5.  Move the planer gently forward, applying pressure on the front of the tool at the start of

planing, and pressure at the rear of the tool towards the end of the planing stroke

6.  Push the planer beyond the edge of the workpiece without tilting it downwards, and switch

off

Notes:

•  Planing is easier if you incline the workpiece slightly away from you so that you plane

'downhill'

•  The rate of planing and the depth of cut determine the quality of the finish. For rough cutting,

you can increase the depth of cut; however, to achieve a good finish you will need to reduce

the depth of cut and advance the tool more slowly

WARNING:

Moving the machine too fast may cause a poor quality of cut and can damage the

blades or the motor.
Moving the machine too slowly may burn or leave marks on the workpiece surface. The appropriate

feed rate will depend on the type of material and the depth of cut. Practise on a scrap piece of
material first, to familiarise yourself with the correct technique.

Chamfering

•  The Sole Plate (19) features a Chamfer Groove (21) to allow for 45˚ chamfer cuts to the edge

of a workpiece

•  To cut a chamfer, locate the edge to be cut in the groove in the Sole Plate. Cut as usual,

holding the planer at 45˚

Rebating

•  The Rebate Depth Gauge (15) and Guide Fence (13) enable you to work parallel to an edge

and form an accurate rebate

•   The brass screw holes on either side of the planer body (front of tool) are for fitting the Rebate

Depth Gauge and Guide Fence
1.  Set the cutting depth and start planing until you reach the required rebate depth
2.  Keep the Guide Fence tight up against the edge of the workpiece during every pass

3.  A better result is achieved if a series of shallow cuts are made, in preference to one deep cut

Emptying the dust bag

WARNING:

ALWAYS switch off and disconnect from the power supply before detaching the dust

bag.

1.  Pull the Dust Bag (1) off the Dust Extraction Port (3)
2.  Open the Dust Bag, empty and clean
3.  Refit to the Dust Extraction Port

Note:

If the dust contains harmful substances, such as particles from old paint, varnish, surface

coatings etc., always dispose of these according to the relevant laws and regulations.

WARNING:

For optimum dust removal, empty the Dust Bag when it is no more than half full.

Accessories

•  A range of accessories and consumables, including spare blades, is available from your

Silverline stockist. Spare parts can be obtained from toolsparesonline.com

Maintenance

WARNING:

ALWAYS disconnect from the power supply before carrying out any inspection,

maintenance or cleaning.

General inspection

•  Regularly check that all the fixing screws are tight
•  Inspect the supply cord of the tool, prior to each use, for damage or wear. Repairs should be

carried out by an authorised Silverline service centre. This advice also applies to extension

cords used with this tool

Cleaning

•   Keep your tool clean at all times. Dirt and dust will cause internal parts to wear quickly, and

shorten the machine’s service life. Clean the body of your machine with a soft brush, or dry

cloth. If available, use clean, dry, compressed air to blow through the ventilation holes

•   Clean the tool casing with a soft damp cloth using a mild detergent. Do not use alcohol, petrol

or strong cleaning agents

•  Never use caustic agents to clean plastic parts

Lubrication

•  Slightly lubricate all moving parts at regular intervals with a suitable spray lubricant

Changing blades

WARNING:

ALWAYS wear suitable cut-proof gloves when handling blades. Take great care, and DO

NOT touch the cutting edge of the blades with your bare fingers.
•  The blades fitted on your planer have two cutting sides and are reversible. To reverse the

blades or fit new blades:
1.  Use the Spanner (9) to loosen the three Clamp Bolts (17) securing the blade assembly

approximately half a turn clockwise

2.  Holding the Blade Clamp (18) in position, gently slide the blade out of the Blade Clamp. Use a

piece of wood or similar to push the blade smoothly

NOTE:

DO NOT remove the Blade Clamp as this can change the factory settings for the cutting

depth adjustment. Also do not adjust the height adjusting screws

3.  Depress the Guard (20) to slide the blade completely out of the clamp
4.  Reverse the blade or use a new blade, then depress the Guard to slide the blade - in the

correct orientation - back into the Blade Clamp

5.  Check the edge of the blade aligns with the side of the Sole Plate (19)
6.  Tighten all bolts equally
7.  Before connecting to power, rotate the drum by hand to check that it does not snag

Changing the drive belt

•  A Spare Drive Belt (10) is included with your planer. To fit the belt:

1.  Remove the three Phillips screws and remove the Drive Belt Cover (7)
2.  Remove the failed belt and clean any debris from the belt pulleys and surrounding area
3.  Fit the Spare Drive Belt over the small pulley, then, rotating the large pulley with one hand,

use the other hand to push the Spare Drive Belt on to the large pulley

4.  Replace the Drive Belt Cover and refit the screws, so the Drive Belt Cover is secured firmly in

position

Brushes

•  Over time the carbon brushes inside the motor may become worn
•   Excessively worn brushes may cause loss of power, intermittent failure, or visible sparking
•   If you suspect that the brushes may be worn, have them replaced at an authorised Silverline

service centre

Note:

One set of Spare Brushes (8) is supplied with this tool.

Storage

•   Store this tool carefully in a secure, dry place out of the reach of children

Disposal

Always adhere to national regulations when disposing of power tools that are no longer functional

and are not viable for repair.
•   Do not dispose of power tools, or other waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE),

with household waste

•   Contact your local waste disposal authority for information on the correct  way to dispose of

power tools

Problem

Possible cause

Solution
