Floppy disks and disk drive System
operation
Working with floppy disks and the floppy disk drive
A floppy disk is a magnetizable plastic disk inside a protective jacket. Data (e.g. text files
and programs) can be stored on a floppy disk. The data (e.g. texts) is stored magnetically
on the floppy disk, like music on a tape cassette.
To store data on a floppy disk, you must insert the disk into a floppy disk drive. Once a
floppy disk is in the drive, the data already stored on it is available to you.
The floppy disk drive turns the floppy disk inside its jacket so that the two read/write
heads of the disk drive can read and write at any position on either side of the floppy disk.
Data is read from and written to both sides of the floppy disk without it having to be taken
out of the drive and turned over.
