Glossary
Directory
You can subdivide the
hard disk
or a
floppy disk
into directories. Each directory is given
a name. This name can be up to 8 characters long.
Directories can be organized according to types of program and/or users. For example,
a directory can be used to store only files belonging to a particular user. This enables
you to organize your data in a clear and straightforward manner.
Directory listing
Every hard disk and every floppy disk has a directory listing of the files and directoris
stored there. Every directory has an own directory listing.
Double click
This is the term used when you briefly press a
mouse button
twice in succession.
Drive designation
Each drive is assigned a letter as its drive designation.
Driver
Some expansions (e.g.
mouse
or
printer
) need an additional
program
to communicate
with the PC. These programs are called drivers.
ESD
Abbreviation for electrostatic sensitive device.
File
A file is a collection of data, e.g. a letter or a
program
. Each file must be given a name
so that it can be distinguished from others.
File extension
The file extension can be used to specify the file type (e.g. DOC dor document). The
extension is tacked onto the
filename
, and separated from it by a period. File
extensions can be up to 3 characters long.

File specification
A file specification consists of a
filename
and the
file extension
. These two parts are
separated by a period. A complete file specification would look like this: "FILE.XXX".
