Moving off
With the parking brake or foot brake set,
shift into the range you wish to use, usually
position D. To move off, release the brake
and accelerate.
Do not release the brake before you are pre-
pared to move, because power is transmitted
to the wheels as soon as a driving range is
engaged.
Selecting a driving range while driving
is easy. Simply release the accelerator pedal
and move the selector lever from the range
you are into the range you want. Then step
on the accelerator again.
Stopping
When stopping temporarily, at traffic lights
for example, it is not necessary to move the
selector lever to N e u t r a l . Simply apply the
brakes. To start again release the brake and
accelerate.
Parking
When parking your car, apply the parking
brake first, and then move the selector lever
to position P. To do this, depress the button
and push the lever through R to P. The trans-
mission is then mechanically locked.
Park may only be engaged when the car is
stationary. At driving speeds above 10 mph
or 15 km/h, a hydraulic lock prevents the
driver from unintentionally moving the selec-
tor lever into position R or P.
Shift out of the Park position, before releas-
ing the parking brake.
W h e n the car is parked on a steep hill, shift-
ing out of Park may be a little harder. This
is due to the weight the car exerts on the
transmission.
Mountain driving
W h e n driving on long, steep and winding
mountain roads select range 2 or 1.
Emergency starting
Y o u r Porsche w i t h Automatic Transmission
cannot be started by pushing or t o w i n g .
Should the engine fail to start consult your
nearest authorized Porsche dealer.
DO N O T START OR T O W the car w i t h o u t
ATF in the transmission, as this will result in
serious damage to transmission and t o r q u e
converter.
Accelerator Pedal
For good fuel economy we recommend
smooth and even acceleration. V e r y fast,
racy driving, alternating between full throttle
and hard braking, raises the fuel c o n s u m p -
tion considerably. A l s o , tires and brake lin-
ings w e a r faster. It is more economical to
drive smoothly and at fairly constant speed.
Accelerator "Kickdown"
If you need quick acceleration to pass mov-
ing vehicles or to climb steep grades, make
use of the accelerator " k i c k d o w n " in your
Porsche with Automatic Transmission.
It gives you the possibility to shift into a
lower gear without moving the selector lever.
The accelerator kickdown can only be ap-
plied w i t h the selector lever in the driving
ranges D and " 2 " .
W h e n depressing the accelerator pedal you
will find resistance at the throttle position.
By applying greater pressure the pedal can
be pushed beyond this point to the kick-
down position. The transmission will now
shift automatically into the next lower gear
to give you maximum acceleration, and only
shift up again after the engine has reached
maximum speed in that particular gear.
Be careful when using the kickdown on slip-
pery roads. Rapid acceleration may cause
skidding.
Please observe the f o l l o w i n g when applying
the accelerator k i c k d o w n :
W i t h the selector lever in D, you can apply
the kickdown to make the transmission shift
d o w n into second gear when driving below
80 mph or 130 km/h and down to first gear
when driving below 45 mph or 75 k m / h .
W i t h the selector lever in " 2 " , you can apply
the kickdown to make the transmission shift
down into first gear when driving below
45 mph or 75 k m / h .
As soon as you release the pedal f r o m the
kickdown position the next higher gear is
automatically engaged.
