OIL PUMP PRIMING
PROCEDURE
NOTE:
This priming procedure must be
performed whenever the oil hose connection
between the oil tank and pump inlet has been
disconnected.
1. Clamp or pinch off vent line (A) approximately 2
I
from oil tank to avoid the end of oil tank vent fitting,
and the vent line’s pressure relief slit
2. Run engine at idle for 10--20 seconds.
3. Shut engine off. Remove the vent line clamp. A
rush of air should be heard, indicating the oil pump
is properly primed and ready for field operation.
Note:
If the system is primed properly you should
hear some air release. If you do not, the system
has not primed. Repeat the process if necessary.

VALVE CLEARANCE
Inspect and adjust valve clearance while the engine
is cold and the piston positioned at Top Dead Center
(TDC) on compression stroke.
1. Remove the seat.
2. Remove body panels and fuel tank as necessary
to gain access to valve cover.
3. Remove the spark plug high tension lead and
remove the spark plug.
CAUTION:
Place a clean
shop towel into the spark plug cavity to prevent
dirt from entering.
4. Remove rocker cover bolts, cover and gasket.
NOTE:
It may be necessary to tap cover lightly
with a soft-faced hammer to loosen it from the
cylinder head.
5. Remove timing inspection plug from recoil
housing.
CAUTION:
Failure to position the crankshaft at TDC
on compression stroke will result in improper valve
adjustment.
