(5) STABILATOR BALANCE WEIGHT TUBE ASSEMBLY INSPECTION
NOTE: Installation of the service replacement Stabilator Balance Weight Tube Assembly P/N
69624-002 per Piper Service Letter No. 576 eliminates this repetitive inspection
requirement.
In PA-32-260/300 aircraft, for airplanes which have not installed Stabilator Balance Weight
Tube Assembly P/N 69624-002,
each 200 hours, inspect as follows:
(a) Remove tail cone assembly and bulkhead close out plate if so equipped.
(b) In the tail cone section, remove safeties from stabilator cable turnbuckles and release
cable tension.
(c) Disconnect stabilator cables at the balance weight tube assembly.
NOTE: Care should be taken as not to misplace the bushing fitted in the tube/cable
attachment lugs.
(d) Remove the stabilator balance weight tube assembly attachment bolts per Figure 3-5 and
inspect bolts for wear.
(e) Pull stabilator balance weight tube assembly forward and remove from stabilator. (It is not
necessary to remove balance weight from tube.)
(f)
Remove paint from balance weight tube in areas of the stabilator attachment bolt holes.
CAUTION: USE ANY COMMERCIAL PAINT REMOVER OR CAUSTIC SODA TO
REMOVE PAINT; WASH PART IN GASOLINE TO REMOVE ANY WAX.
(g) Inspect tube for cracks in this area by use of the dye penetrant method.
1.
Should cracks be detected, replace balance weight tube assembly with service
replacement P/N 69624-002.
2.
If cracks are not detected, either prime tube with zinc chromate primer and paint with
flat black enamel prior to reinstallation of existing tube, or install new stabilator
balance weight tube assembly (reference steps (j) thru (m), below, for balance weight
tube installation and stabilator control system rigging information).
(h) Inspect stabilator mounting points for possible stabilator side movement. Should side
movement be evident, install combination of AN960-416L (P/N 407-585) and AN960-416
(P/N 407-565) washers, as many as necessary to center the stabilator assembly and
eliminate any side movement.
(i)
Visually inspect stabilator fittings (P/N 63567-03) for evidence of cracks and/or loose
rivets (refer to Figure 3-5).
1.
Should the fitting(s) be cracked, replace with new stabilator fitting(s), P/N 63567-03.
2.
Remove loose rivets and replace with new rivets.
(j)
Install stabilator balance weight tube assembly and stabilator fittings. Install and tighten
bolts (forward bolt should be installed first for ease).
NOTE: Aircraft-tapered corner of weight is installed toward the top.
