4-36. BALANCING RUDDER. (See Figure 4-17a.)
To balance rudder, the rudder assembly must be painted and complete including sector assembly, rudder
tip fairing assembly, position light and wiring, and all attaching screws. Place complete assembly
horizontally on knife edge support in a draft-free area in a manner that allows unrestricted movement.
Place tool shown in Figure 4-15 on rudder with beam perpendicular to hinge centerline. Calibrate tool as
described in Balancing Equipment, above. Read scale when bubble level has been centered by
adjustment of moveable weight and determine static balance limit.
This value shall be within the limits given in Table IV-II. If the static balance of the rudder is not within
the limits shown, use the following procedures:
a. Nose Heavy: This condition is highly improbable; recheck measurements and calculations.
b. Nose Light: In this case, the mass balance weight is too light, or the rudder too heavy. If the rudder
is too heavy because of painting, it will be necessary to strip the paint and start over. If the rudder is
too heavy as a result of repairs, the repair must be removed and the damaged parts replaced.
