A
AE
An abbreviation for "Automatic Exposure".
The built-in exposure meter automatically sets exposure. The
exposure depends on the aperture. C-2500L has aperture
mode AE and programmed AE. The user sets the aperture
first manually under aperture mode AE while the camera sets
the aperture and the shutter speed automatically under pro-
grammed AE.
A mode
"A" is an abbreviation for aperture.
The user sets the aperture first manually and the camera
sets the shutter speed accordingly.
Aperture
The mechanism for controlling the amount of light. The small-
er the aperture is, the more fuzzy the background is. This is
used for perspective.
Autofocus
The mechanism to bring a subject into focus automatically.
B
Browser
Internet viewing software. Popular products are Netscape
Communicator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Pictures taken
with the Camedia C-2500L can be viewed with a browser.
C
Close-up
Generic term for taking photographs at a close distance to
the subject. With the Camedia C-2500L, you can take pho-
tographs up close to the subject in either the macro mode (30
cm ~ 60 cm) (1 ft. ~ 2 ft.)or super macro mode (2 cm~30 cm)
(0.8 in. ~ 1 ft.).
Center metering
Light metering technique which measures light across a wide
area centered on the subject. This technique is suitable for
general photography, but its disadvantage is that the overall
exposure of the entire image can be affected by extremely
bright or dark spots.
Color temperature
Barometer to indicate a color of the source of light. The unit is
"K (kelvin: the unit for the absolute temperature)". The color of
light vary with increase of the temperature, such as
red
➝
orange
➝
yellow
➝
white
➝
blue-white. Color temperature
shows the relation between the color and the temperature.
The actual temperature of the sun (surface temp: 6000˚K)
agrees with its color while fluorescent lights measure 4200˚K
because they seem the same as objects whose absolute
temperatures are 4200˚K.
CompactFlash memory card
Compact recording media. Storage capacity is 2MB or more.
CompactFlash memory card adapter
Adapter used to read images stored on a CompactFlash
memory card with a personal computer. The card is fit inside
the adapter and then the adapter is loaded into the PC's card
slot. After that, images can be read on PC.
D
Diopter adjustment mechanism
The mechanism to optimize the image in the viewfinder. It
adjusts by changing the diopter of the finder lens. Viewfinder
images are set to best fit for people with ordinary eye-sight.
Therefore, those who are nearsighted or farsighted can't view
them properly without glasses on. Diopter adjustment mecha-
nism adjusts this.
E
EV
An abbreviation for "Exposure Value".
EV=0 when the aperture value is f1 and the shutter speed is
1 second under ISO=100. The value increases by 1 as the
aperture value increases by 1 or the shutter speed becomes
longer by 1 step. In the reverse case, EV decreases. It is also
possible to express EV with brightness and ISO. When ISO
doubles, the value increases by 1; when ISO is halved, the
value decreases by 1.
Exposure
Amount of light entering the camera. Exposure is based on
the shutter speed and aperture.
Exposure compensation
The operation of compensation by increasing or decreasing
the exposure which has been set under AE. When increasing,
it is called "Plus compensation", and when decreasing, it is
called "Minus compensation".
F
Flash Path
Adapter for 3.5 inch floppy disk, used to read images stored
on a SmartMedia with a personal computer. The card is fit
inside the Flash Path and then the Flash Path is loaded into
the PC's 3.5 inch floppy disk drive. After that, images can be
read on PC.
Focus
The act of bringing a subject into a sharp, clear image.
Format
1 A style for images or documents. C-2500L supports JPEG
and TIFF.
2 The process of readying a blank disk or card for its first
use. You need to format SmartMedia/CompactFlash memory
cards before use.
I
ISO
Unit for expressing the photosensitivity of 35mm film, com-
monly referred to as "film speed". The sensitivity scale stan-
dardized by the International Standards Organization (ISO) is
used with the Camedia C-2500L. Commonly, it is expressed
in the form of "ISO 100". The higher the numerical value, the
higher the sensitivity to light. ISO is used for the digital cam-
era, too. With this camera, you can select from 3 speeds:
100, 200 and 400.
J
JPEG
Compression standard for color still pictures. Image data
taken with the Camedia C-2500L is stored on the
SmartMedia or CompactFlash memory card in JPEG format.
Image data on either type of media can be edited with graph-
ic applications and viewed with a browser.
