RA I D 5 – Bl o ck St r i p i n g w i t h D i st r i b u t e d Pa r i t y
RAI D 5 organizes block dat a and parit y dat a across t he disk driv es. Generally,
RAI D level 5 t ends t o ex hibit low er random w rit e perform ance due t o t he
heavy w orkload of parit y recalculat ion for each I / O. RAI D 5 w ork s w ell for file,
dat abase, application and web ser vers.
The capacit y of a RAI D 5 Volum e equals t he sm allest disk driv e t im es t he
num ber of disk driv es, m inus one. Hence, a RAI D 5 Volum e wit h four 100 GB
disk driv es will hav e a capacit y of 300 GB. A RAI D Volum e wit h t w o 120 GB
disk driv es and one 100 GB disk driv e will hav e a capacit y of 200 GB.
RAI D 5 is generally considered t o be t he m ost v ersatile RAI D lev el.
RAI D 5 requires a m inim um of t hree disk dr ives.

Mirror/ St ripe com bines bot h of t he RAI D 0 and RAI D 1 t y pes. RAI D 10 can
increase perform ance by r eading and w rit ing dat a in parallel w hile prot ect ing
dat a wit h duplicat ion. At least four disk driv es are needed for RAI D 10 t o be
inst alled. Wit h a four - disk- driv e RAI D Volum e, one drive pair is m irrored
t oget her t hen st riped ov er a second drive pair.
