Parallel cable
A data cable which transfers multiple bits of information
simultaneously along each of its wires from the computer to the
printer.
Parallel interface
This term is used to describe the connection between a computer
and a peripheral device such as a printer. Through this type of
connection, the synchronized transfer of multi-bit data is enabled
via multiple wires over a limited distance. The Centronics interface
is a typical example of a parallel interface.
Port
A connection through which the computer sends information to
other devices. Parallel ports send multiple bits of data at a time and
are usually used for printers. Serial ports send one bit at a time and
are often used for modems.
PostScript font
A type of scalable-outline font that is faithful to the standards of
quality that are generally adopted in the typographical industry.
When installed or downloaded to a PostScript-compatible printer,
PostScript fonts can be used to produce smoother text than
bitmapped fonts. See also Bitmap font and Scalable font.
PostScript printer driver
The program that enables a computer to send a print job in
PostScript.
Power Save
This is a setting which is used to conserve energy by enabling the
printer to operate in a “power save mode” during a specified
period.
Printable area
The area of the page in which the printer is able to print. Page
printers have a nonprint margin on each edge of the paper. The
printable area is the space within these margins.
