1.1 Chapter Overview
This chapter will introduce you to the Technical Reference
Manual: what it covers, how it’s organized, and for whom it’s
written.
1.2 How to Use This Manual
This manual was prepared to be viewed on a Windows-based
PC. A pdf file for this manual is provided on the CD ROM
delivered with each SCM4000. The CD ROM contains pdf files
for the Operator’s Guide, the Technical Reference Manual, and
the Quick Reference Cards. Hardcopies of the Operator’s
Guide, the Technical Reference Manual, and the Quick
Reference Cards are also delivered with each SCM4000.

1.3 What This Manual Covers
This manual describes how to operate and maintain the
SCM4000 Single Carrier Modem.
Your SCM4000 will consist of one of the following configurations:
• SCM4000 Modulator
• SCM4000 Demodulator
• SCM4000 Modulator/Demodulator
• SCM4000 Modulator/Encoder
• SCM4000 Demodulator/Decoder.
This manual provides coverage for each of these various
configurations.
Your SCM4000 can be rack-mounted in a standard 19-inch (48.3
cm) rack for fixed site or mobile operations and can be ordered
to operate on either AC or DC power.
