Em ission Control
Certain system s of the engine
serve to keep the toxic co m p o
nents o f the exhaust gases within
perm issible limits required by law.
These system s, of course, will
function properly only when
m aintained strictly according to
factory specifications. A ny adjust
ments on the engine should,
therefore, be carried out only by
qualified M ercedes-Benz autho
rized dealer technicians. Engine
adjustm ents should not be altered
in any way. M oreover, the specified
service jobs m ust be carried out
regularly according to M ercedes-
Benz servicing requirem ents. For
details refer to the Service Booklet.
W arning!
Inhalation of exh au st gas is
hazardous to yo u r health. All
exhaust gas con tains carbon
m onoxide, and inhaling it can
cause unco n scio u sn ess and
lead to death.
Do not run the engine in con
fined areas (such as a garage)
w hich are not properly venti
lated. If you thin k that exhaust
gas fum es are entering the ve
hicle w hile driving, have the
cause determ ined and cor
rected im m ediately. If you
m ust drive under these condi
tions, drive only w ith at least
one w indow fully open.
O n-Board Diagnostic System
T he Sequential M ultiport Fuel
Injection (SFI) control m odule
m onitors em ission control
com ponents that either provide
input signals to or receive output
signals from the control module.
M alfunctions resulting from
interruptions or failure of any of
these com ponents are indicated by
the “CFIECK EN G INE” m alfunction
indicator lam p in the instrum ent
cluster and are sim ultaneously
stored in the SFI control module.
If the “C H E C K EN G INE” m alfunc
tion indicator lamp com es on, have
the system checked at your autho
rized M ercedes-Benz dealer as
soon as possible.
W ith som e exceptions, the control
m odule sw itches off the “CHECK
EN G INE” m alfunction indicator
lam p if the condition, causing the
lam p to com e on, no longer exists
during three consecutive cycles.
An on-board diagnostic connector
is located in the passenger com
partm ent near the engine hood
release, allowing the accurate
identification of system m alfunc
tions through the readout of
diagnostic trouble codes.
