A cceleration Slip R egulation
(ASR)
The ASR will engage at all vehicle
speeds, if one or both drive w heels
begin to lose traction and spin in
acceleration. W hile engaged, the
yellow w arning lam p in the speedo
m eter dial flashes.
With the ASR engaged, the brake
is applied to the spinning drive
wheel until slip is brought under
control. If both drive w heels spin,
the brake is applied to both drive
wheels and sim ultaneously, engine
torque is limited, to im prove the
vehicle’s driving stability.
As traction on the road surface
increases, thus allowing accelera
tion w ithout slip, the allowable
engine torque also increases again
and the brake is no longer applied
to drive wheels.
Important!
If the ASR w arning lam p flashes,
adapt your speed and driving to the
prevailing road conditions.
Caution!
If the vehicle is towed with the front
axle raised (see
Towing the vehicle
in Index), the engine m ust be shut
off (key in steering lock position 0
or 1). O therw ise, the AS R will
im m ediately be engaged and will
apply the rear wheel brakes.
Notes:
The m alfunction indicator lam p for
the ASR is com bined with that of
the BAS.
The yellow BAS/ASR m alfunction
indicator lam p in the instrum ent
cluster and the yellow ASR w arn
ing lam p in the speedom eter dial
com e on with the key in steering
lock position 2. They should go out
with the engine running.
If the BA S/A SR m alfunction
indicator lam p com es on with the
engine running, a m alfunction has
been detected in either system.
Pressing the accelerator pedal will
require greater effort. Only partial
engine output will be available.
If the BAS m alfunctions, the brake
system functions in the usual
m anner, but w ithout BAS.
Have the BAS or ASR checked at
your authorized M ercedes-Benz
dealer as soon as possible.
W ith the ABS m alfunctioning, the
ASR is also sw itched off.
Driving the vehicle with varied size
tires will cause the w heels to rotate
at different speeds, therefore the
ASR m ay activate (yellow ASR
w arning lamp in speedom eter dial
com es on). For this reason, all
wheels, including the spare wheel,
m ust have the sam e tire size.
W hen testing the parking brake on
a brake test dynam om eter, the en
gine m ust be shut off. Otherwise,
the AS R will im m ediately be
engaged and will apply the rear
wheel brakes.
In w inter operation, the maxim um
effectiveness of the ASR is only
achieved with M ercedes-Benz
recom m ended M +S rated radial-ply
tires and/or snow chains.
