7 Modifications to the basic vehicle
7.1.4
Air suspension

WARNING
Retrofitting air suspension may lead to the ESP
®
no
longer functioning correctly. The driver could lose
control of the vehicle and cause an accident. In
order to retrofit air suspension systems, coordina-
tion with the department responsible (see section
1.6 “Contact” (
Page 9)) and an upfitter impact
study (UIS) is therefore required.
7.1.5
Wheels and tires

WARNING
Only use tire types and sizes which are approved
for the corresponding vehicle model. Observe the
tire load capacity and speed rating required for the
vehicle and comply with the tire inflation pressure
specified for the type of tire.
In particular, comply with national regulations
concerning the approval of tires. These regulations
may define a specific type of tire for the vehicle or
may forbid the use of certain tire types which are
approved in other countries.
If different wheels are mounted, the following dan-
gers may arise:
•
Brakes or suspension components may be dam-
aged.
•
The clearance of the wheels may no longer be
guaranteed.
•
Brakes or suspension components may no longer
function correctly.
The upfitter must ensure that the following require-
ments are fulfilled:
•
There must be sufficient space between the tire
and the fender or wheel well even with snow or
anti-skid chains fitted and the suspension fully com-
pressed (allowing for axle twist). The relevant speci-
fications in the 2D drawings must be observed.
•
Only approved tires and tire sizes may be used (see
motor vehicle registration certificate, 2D drawings
(see chapter 1.1 “Overview” (
tables under chapter 5.2.2 “Approved tire sizes”

7.1.6
Spare wheel
Country-specific equipment or special equipment may
include a spare wheel.
For the attachment, the following requirements shall be
complied with in addition to the legal directives:
•
The attachment shall take place under the frame as
per the 2D drawing.
•
Good accessibility and ease of operation must be
ensured.
•
The spare wheel must be doubly secured to prevent
loss.
