Upfitter responsibilities
All complete vehicles of the Metris model manufac-
tured by Daimler AG are certified in accordance with
the exhaust emission regulations. A corresponding
certification label with information on exhaust emis-
sion control is attached. A completed Metris van "as
delivered" is certified in accordance with the applicable
FMVSS and CMVSS standards. A corresponding notice
and/or logo can be found on the identification plate.
If these Metris vehicles are modified by the installation
of additional equipment, the upfitter becomes responsi-
ble for conformity of the modified vehicle with respect
to all of the applicable safety and emissions regulations
affected by their modification, including labeling and
documentation.
Chapter 2.1 “Overview” (
Page 15) of this guide-
line contains general information on modifications for
upfitters. The provisions of 49 C.F.R §§567.5 - 567.7
and Section 9 of the Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety
Regulations define the legal obligations of upfitters to
comply with vehicle safety standards. These provisions
are available in full at
Upfitters should obtain legal advice regarding these
obligations.
For all other modifications and installations made by an
upfitter, the following applies:
•
Do not modify Metris components which are
located in front of the rear panel of the cab (on
Metris models with a partition) or in front of the
seating reference point of Metris vehicles, unless
you are installing approved components (e.g. air
conditioning system, radio), which have been
approved or recommended by Daimler AG, MBUSA,
MBCAN or their representative UPFITTER MANAGE-
MENT VANS.
•
Do not modify the position or impair the function-
ality and/or clearance of movable chassis com-
ponents i.e. axles, springs, drive shafts, steering
systems, brake systems, gearshift linkages, exhaust
systems etc.
•
Do not modify, impair or damage the Metris sub-
structure and do not perform any drilling on the
substructure.
•
Do not modify, damage or change the position of
the fuel system, seat belt assemblies and anchor-
ages, the brake system or the steering of the
Metris.
•
Do not impair the operational safety, roadworthi-
ness or drivability of the Metris by modifying the
body or installing or modifying accessory equip-
ment.
The upfitter is responsible for ensuring that modifica-
tions and installation of equipment do not affect the
safety of the Metris. MBUSA, MBCAN and UPFITTER
MANAGEMENT VANS accept no responsibility for
certification or claims based on warranty entitlements
resulting from modified components, assemblies or
systems including when such modifications cause the
vehicle to no longer comply with emission and vehicle
safety standards or render the vehicle faulty or unsafe
in any other way.
