5. Installation and Start-Up
5.1 General
The following points must be noted in order to prevent damages to the pump during installation and operation:
The installation work must be carried out by qualified personnel in compliance with the safety
regulations.
The pump must be checked for possible damages prior to installation.
The minimum submersion in water must be considered for level control.
Air pockets in the pump casing and in pipes must be absolutely avoided (by means of appropriate
venting facilities or slight tilting of the pump).
Protect the pump from frost.
The mechanical room must be designed for the respective machinery. This includes also that a
lifting device for assembly/disassembly can be installed, with which the installation site of the pump
can be reached without danger.
The lifting device must have a maximal lifting power which is more than the weight of the pump with
mounting parts and cable.
The power lines of the pump must run in such a way that hazard-free operation and easy
assembly/disassembly is possible.
The power lines in the operating room must be installed properly in order to prevent loose hanging
cables. Depending on the cable length and weight, a cable bracket must be installed every 2-3m.
The foundation/building must have adequate structural strength for securing the pump safely and in
a proper functional manner. The plant operator is responsible for this.
Running dry is most strictly forbidden. We recommend a level control system for this purpose.
Use baffle plates at the intake. This prevents air being drawn into the conveyed medium, causing
unfavourable operating conditions and increased wear.
5.2 Installation
Danger of falls!
When mounting the pump and its accessories, work is carried out directly at the edge of the basin!
Carelessness or wrong footwear can lead to falls. There is danger to life!
Take all safety measures to prevent this.
Fix the pressure pipe or the hose on the pressure branch of the pump and lay the pressure pipe. When using a
threaded hose connection or pipe connection, the hose connector at the branch of the pump can be cut off.
In order to ensure optimum flow rate, the pressure line should have a diameter of at least
1“ or 1 ¼“.
If a spiral hose is used as a pressure line, please note that a commercially available spiral hose has a bursting
pressure of 6 bar. This pressure resistance may be too low for the operation of high-pressure submersible pumps.
Please use only a spiral hose that displays a pressure resistance appropriate to the relevant type of pump.
Fix the pump on the handhold with a rope or chain and lower down into the medium.
If the pumps are used on a muddy or sandy bottom, they are to be installed hanging from a cable with the suction
opening at least 30 cm above the bottom so that the admission sieve is protected against obstruction.
Float switch for intermediate coupling
Pumps without float switch can be retrofitted with a HOMA float switch for intermediate coupling. The electrical
connection is done by the intermediate coupling of the float switch between the outlet and the plug of the pump.
With retrofitted installation, attach the float cable onto the pump or riser tube or on any other permanently installed
point according to the desired switching distance and level. Never throw the float with cable into the medium,
since the correct switching is only possible with a rotary movement of the float around the mounting point of the
cable. Possible consequences of non-compliance are flooding (pump does not turn on), or destruction of the
pump by running dry (pump does not stop).
Important: After each change of the float mounting, it is necessary to check the proper function of the
float switch by performing a trial run.
