5. Definitions
A basic understanding of the following terms will assist in
maintaining and operating Hartzell propeller systems.
Term
Definition
Annealed ...................... Softening of material due to
overexposure to heat.
Blade Angle .................. Measurement of blade airfoil location
described as the angle between
the blade airfoil and the surface
described by propeller rotation.
Brinelling ....................... A depression caused by failure of the
material in compression.
Chord ............................ A straight line distance between
the leading and trailing edges of an
airfoil.
Cold Rolling .................. Compressive rolling process that
provides improved strength and
resistance to fatigue.
Constant Force ............. A force which is always present in
some degree when the propeller is
operating.
Constant Speed ............ A propeller system which employs
a governing device to maintain a
selected engine RPM.
Corrosion ...................... Gradual material removal or
deterioration due to chemical action.
