Adding ETHER-1000 Unit to a System in Service
WARNING
The ETHER-1000 firmware Version 3 is not backwards compatible with
Version 1. Before installing a V3 unit into a system with ETHER-1000 V1
units, all existing ETHER-1000 units need to be upgraded to V3. See
Appendix F for details.
Before installation:
a) Ensure that a pair of appropriate CBW cables is available (see Table 3 on
page 53). (Only one CBW cable is required at the end of a linear system.)
b) Locate the CBW port(s) on the OC-N JMUX unit(s) to which the ETHER-1000
unit is to be connected. The selected port(s) must support the required CBW
mode of operation (see notes under Table 3 on page 53). Note that the same
CBW port (e.g. CBW-F) must be used on both OC-N units. Also note that
one of the two Line ports may be alternatively connected to another ETHER-
1000 unit‟s Line port (cascading).
c) Ensure that the shelf slots selected for ETHER-1000 unit installation are
within reach of the CBW cables connected to the selected OC-
N JMUX units‟
CBW ports.
d) Ensure there is enough power on the shelf.
Note:
Depending on the number and type of SFP transceivers installed, the
typical ETHER-1000 unit power consumption may range from 8 to 14 W. This
sometimes requires adding a third power supply unit in the shelf.
Installation:
1. Install the ETHER-1000 unit paddleboard on the shelf backplane (refer
Paddleboard Installation
information earlier in this section). Ensure that the
JVT/DS0 channel bus extender (087-86430-90) is not installed in the
backplane underneath nor on either side of the paddleboard.
