Possible Cause
The Simple Solution to the Problem
Espresso runs out
around the edge of
the filter holder.
Portafilter is not inserted in the
grouphead properly
Insert the portafilter correctly. Refer to ›Inserting The
Portafilter‹
There are espresso grounds
around the filter rim.
Clean any excess ground espresso from the rim of the
portafilter to ensure a proper fit into the grouphead.
Too much ground espresso in
the filter
Measure with the measurring spoon a sufficient
amount of coffee powder; see ›Preparing the Espresso‹.
Ground espresso has been
tamped too firmly.
Tamp the ground espresso less firmly in the filter; see:
›Useful Tips‹.
Incorrect filter for amount of
ground coffee used.
Ensure you use the small filter for 1 cup of espresso
and the larger filter for 2 cups of espresso.
Espresso extracts as
drops from the por-
tafilter.
The water tank is empty or
low.
Fill fresh cold water into the water tank.
Espresso grind is too fine
Ensure you use a suitable espresso grind. Ground cof-
fee is marked accordingly.
Machine is blocked by mineral
deposits.
Descale the appliance and unclog the pores of the filter
with the needle of the cleaning tool.
The appliance makes
an unusual sucking
sound.
The water tank is empty.
Fill fresh cold water into the water tank.
The water tank is not installed
properly.
Install the water tank correctly on the appliance. The
guide grooves on the back of the water tank must pro-
perly engage in the recesses on the back of the appli-
ance. Press the tank down low so that the water valve
opens in the bottom of the water tank.
The coffee is too
weak or watery.
The coffee is ground too coar-
sely.
Ensure you use a suitable espresso grind. Ground cof-
fee is marked accordingly.
The coffee is too cold. The appliance was not pre-
heated.
Always wait before brewing the espresso for the appli-
ance to reach operating temperature and the heating
indicator to turn off.
The cups were not preheated. The warming plate (ontop of the appliance) is heated
as soon as you turn on the appliance. Place your coffee
mugs there for some time before brewing espresso.
The milk is not hot enough
(for Cappuccino or Latté).
Use the milk frothing hug for the preparation of milk
froth and hold the hand during operation at the bottom
of the jug. If the bottom of the jug is too hot to touch,
the milk is at the right temperature.
