Measurement of wear and
Nondestructive testing (NDT)
The Forum B + V Oil Tools critical area illustrations shall be
used to indicate the areas considered as to be critical.
INFO
If no illustration of critical area is placed in this
segment it can be assumed that the complete
component was considered to inherit critical
areas as total.
» As during factory acceptance testing by the
manufacturer during production all major indication
types have been addressed only cracks which have
developed in service need to be examined and
reviewed.
» It is considered to examine machined surfaces using
the wet fluorescent method, while for other surfaces
the wet or dry method can be used according to local
standards.
» The areas which are subject to MPI inspection shall
be inspected according to the on site maintenance
procedures or as per API RP 7K.
» To measure link ears it is necessary to use callipers and
a ruler.
» Hinge Pins, Latch Pins and socket holes are not
normally measured for wear in the field. When it
becomes apparent that the Hinge or Latch Pins have
more tolerances, the elevator should be dismantled for
general engineering check up.
5.8.1 Remanufacturing
Remanufacturing and repair of critical areas or load
bearing parts must be done only by Forum B + V Oil Tools
or a Forum B + V Oil Tools authorized service company.
Also minor cracks or defects, which may be removed
by grinding without reducing safety or operation of the
elevator, must be done only by Forum B + V Oil Tools
or a Forum B + V Oil Tools authorized service company.
Following the repair, the parts should again be inspected
by an appropriate method to insure that the defect has
been completely removed.
5.8.2 Wear at the Tool Joint of a Drill Pipe
The elevator wear is measured directly at the pipe inlet of
the elevator. The maximal wear at the bore is:
• Max. Wear for BC < 10": 0.137" [3.48 mm].
• Max. Wear for BC > 10": 0,25" [6.35 mm].
The following table shows the minimum required Tool
Joint diameter, depending on the Centre Bore. As soon
as the Tool Joint diameter falls below the rating line, the
bushing/Elevator or the pipe has to be changed
(Contact Forum B + V Oil Tools or a Forum B + V Oil Tools
authorized Repair Centre).
